We are committed to helping our patients relax and have a comfortable visit while undergoing their dental procedures. To this end, we provide options for sedation to help calm nerves. Some procedures are best performed with the patient completely relaxed.
IV Sedation Dentistry
This type of sedation puts most patients in a type of twilight sleep. You are still conscious but very relaxed. You will be able to respond to verbal commands and light physical touch. IV sedation provides patients with a very relaxed but semi-awake state of reduced anxiety.
IV sedation is not the same as general anesthesia. In the case of the latter, the patient is completely unconscious and unresponsive to verbal commands or any physical stimulation. An anesthesiologist is required to monitor breathing and heart rate, as these can be affected with general anesthesia
Conscious Sedation
Another type of conscious sedation is provided in pill form. A sedative is administered before the dental procedure is due to take place. The patient swallows the pill, and it takes effect within a certain amount of time. This sedation method also is one in which the patient remains awake but is in a very relaxed state.
Both IV and conscious sedation require that the patient is driven home after the procedure is completed and recovery time has passed. These types of sedation methods can take a while to leave the system. This is why it is necessary to have someone to drive you home afterward.
